Smell Like That Girl: The Perfumes That Make You Feel Confident (and the Science of Why)

Why the way you smell changes how a room feels about you, and how you feel about yourself.

Smell Like That Girl: The Perfumes That Make You Feel Confident (and the Science of Why)
The short answer

Perfume makes you feel confident because smell is wired more directly to the brain's emotion and memory centres than any other sense, and because how you smell changes how you carry yourself. Choose one everyday scent and one going-out scent you genuinely love, layer them over moisturised skin, and wear them on purpose.

Key takeaways

  • Smell reaches the brain's emotion and memory areas more directly than sight, sound or touch.
  • That's why a scent can pull you straight back to a memory, and why people feel something about you before they think it.
  • A signature scent works on you too: posture, eye contact, taking up space.
  • A compliment on how you smell is the easiest confidence win you'll get all week.
  • Layer it: moisturiser or oil first, then a skin scent, then your statement bottle.

I walked into a room and had three compliments within five minutes, and I'm going to tell you exactly how. And before we get into it... I'm not saying this in a "go Kylie go" way. I'm saying it because EVERY woman deserves to feel this way. And if you're not convinced after this post... well, we have work to do.

Why does smelling good make you more confident?

Okay so hear me out. We operate off three main senses when it comes to first impressions: sight, smell and hearing. And let's be so for real... if you are tragically dressed, lacking any sense of confidence, and smell like sh*t, you are the trifecta of tragic sad sack energy. (Harsh, I know, but true, and I'm not in the business of pandering emotions.) But you want to come on in and listen to Mama Hen, because I'm going to make your life a whole lot easier.

We're going to start with the lowest hanging fruit: the sense of smell.

And no, your $5 drugstore deodorant is not going to cut it. You are going to get rid of the hideous florals, the grandma scents, the basic b*tch perfumes, and you are going to upgrade. You are going to work on smelling like a premium snack from a mile away. Don't come at me. Hate the game, not the player, because I am telling you, this works.

Women who smell good instantly have this magnetic energy, and you cannot deny it. It's giving... she's got her sh*t together. She smells expensive. Even if she looks homeless, she smells like that f*cking girl. The girls who get it... GET IT.

And this is where the good stuff really starts to roll in. People will compliment you on the way you smell. Compliments give you that feel-good hit, and shockingly, feeling good makes you happy. If you are stuck in a rut right now, unhappy, unmotivated, miserable in your relationship, you need as many of those wins as you can get. You need the compliments to pull your head out of the gutter and right up into the world, getting hungry as f*ck for your goals and remembering that you are that b*tch that makes it happen.

Getting the win from that third sense, the easiest win of them all, then ripples into the other two. Because then you think, if I smell good and people are noticing, imagine if I looked good. Imagine if I actually educated myself so I could hold a conversation. That is how we become the high-value woman. One of the other low hanging fruits? GET SMART AF. So let me educate the f*ck out of you.

Why does smell trigger memories and emotions?

Okay, stay with me, because this is actually wild and it explains everything.

Every single one of your senses, what you see, what you hear, what you touch, what you taste, has to go through a relay station in your brain before it gets processed. Like a middleman. It takes a detour before it lands anywhere meaningful.

But smell? Smell pretty much skips the middleman. It goes straight to the part of your brain that handles your emotions and your memories. No detour. Just straight there.

This is literally why you can smell someone's cologne and suddenly feel things you were absolutely not prepared to feel. Or why a specific perfume can take you straight back to a memory from ten years ago like it happened yesterday. Or why you can walk past a stranger in the supermarket and feel drawn to them before you've even looked at their face. Your nose is wired to your feelings in a way nothing else is. Scientists have found that smell-triggered memories tend to be more emotional and more vivid than memories triggered by anything else.

So when you walk into a room smelling incredible? You're not just making a nice impression. You're going straight for the emotional response. People don't stop to think, "oh, she smells nice." They just... feel something. Comfort. Warmth. Attraction. She is someone worth remembering. It feels like you're hacking the room without saying a single word. Before you've spoken. Before they've even properly looked at you. The scent has already done the work. I mean COME ON. It's a run not walk situation.

That's why your signature scent is not a finishing touch. It's a power move. It walks into the room before you do and stays long after you leave.

What does a signature scent do for you?

And if it couldn't get any better... wearing a premium fragrance doesn't just change how others perceive you. It changes how you perceive yourself. The psychology of perfume says the right fragrance can lift your mood and how you see yourself.

When you know you smell edible, your posture changes. You take up more space. You make eye contact. You stop apologising for existing. YOU KNOW THIS IS TRUE. You spritz on that slightly more expensive perfume and instantly feel your body shift.

It's a feedback loop. The perfume makes you feel confident, your confident behaviour makes you more attractive, and the positive reinforcement from others cements that high-value self-image. So how do we execute this? You need the right arsenal... and that means an UPGRADE.

How do you find your signature scent?

Throw out the basic body sprays. Here's how to choose on purpose:

  1. Start with what you already love. The scents people compliment you on, the ones you keep going back to.
  2. Pick a lane from the tiers below: everyday, snack, feminine powerhouse, it girl, or "she has arrived".
  3. Test on your skin, not the paper strip, and wear it for a few hours before you decide. A scent changes as it settles.
  4. Choose two: one for every day, one for going out.

How do you make perfume last longer?

Scent holds on hydrated skin. I am the queen of body moisturisers and oils. Essential... and I'll do a dedicated post about the everything shower. Then I layer:

  • The gym: Let the Good Times Roll, plus a couple of spritzes of Prada Paradoxe or Kylie Jenner Cosmic.
  • Going out: the high-end bottles only. Prada Paradoxe, Cosmic, or Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540.

Henny's fragrance arsenal

My go-tos? Let the Good Times Roll (believe me, thank me later), Prada Paradoxe and Cosmic by Kylie Jenner.

The everyday girl. Grab and go. Confident. Zero effort required.

  • Let the Good Times Roll: the gym snack. Warm, skin-like, addictive.
  • Narciso Rodriguez Her: clean musk. Quiet magnetism. Wears like a second skin.
  • Maison Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning: soft, warm, effortless.
  • Commodity Gold: sandalwood and musk. Invisible luxury.
  • Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa 40: pistachio and salted caramel. The "what are you wearing" scent.

The snack scents. You will smell edible. You have been warned.

  • Let the Good Times Roll: she leads this category for a reason.
  • Summer Fridays Sunlight Vanilla: warm vanilla, skin-close, addictive without being heavy.
  • Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa 40: pistachio, caramel, warm skin. People lean IN.
  • Kayali Vanilla 28: THE iconic vanilla. Everyone who owns it finishes the bottle. Every time.

The feminine powerhouse. Soft, but she will NOT be ignored.

  • Prada Paradoxe: layered, modern, clean. She has her life together.
  • Chanel Coco Mademoiselle: THE classic. Every high-value woman has worn this.
  • YSL Libre: lavender and amber. Feminine AND strong. No apology.
  • Mugler Alien: woody, solar, otherworldly. She walks in and the air changes.
  • Tom Ford Black Orchid: dark, rich, smooth. The "who IS she" scent.

The it girl. Trendy, but done RIGHT.

  • Kylie Jenner Cosmic: sweet, warm, wearable. Stop overthinking it.
  • Valentino Voce Viva Intensa: deep vanilla and woods. Memorable, distinctive.
  • Dior Ambre Nuit: amber and woods. Rich, sexy, unexpected.
  • Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Extreme: vanilla, amber, tobacco. A f*cking statement.
  • Tom Ford Vanille Fatale: vanilla with suede, tobacco and coffee. Grown, seductive, not basic.

The "she has arrived" level. Investments. Wear them like you mean it.

  • Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540: the one. You don't wear it. It wears the room.
  • Tom Ford Oud Wood: deep, woody, resinous. Quiet power.
  • Byredo Gypsy Water: bergamot, sandalwood, vanilla, incense. Understated wealth.
  • Parfums de Marly Delina Exclusif: rhubarb and musk over warmth. A compliment magnet.
  • Initio Atomic Rose: musk-forward, skin-like, provocative. Niche and worth every cent.

Throw out the basic body sprays. It's time to smell like you own the place.

Stop playing small. Upgrade your scent, and let it walk in before you do.

Questions

Can wearing perfume actually make you more confident?

Yes, and mostly because of what it does to you. When you know you smell good, you stand taller, make eye contact and take up more space, and the compliments that follow feel good. Confidence feeds on wins, and this is an easy one.

Why does smell trigger such strong memories and emotions?

Smell reaches the brain's emotion and memory areas more directly than the other senses do. That's why one perfume can take you straight back to a moment from years ago, and why people feel something about your scent before they think it.

How do I choose a signature scent for myself?

Start with the scents you already love and get complimented on, pick a style (everyday, sweet, powerful, statement), test on your skin for a few hours, and choose two: one everyday and one for going out.

How do I make perfume last longer on my skin?

Put it on over moisturised skin. Henny layers a body moisturiser or oil first, then a skin scent, then her statement perfume.

What perfume makes you smell expensive?

On Henny's list, the "she has arrived" level: Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540, Tom Ford Oud Wood, Byredo Gypsy Water and Parfums de Marly Delina Exclusif.

What perfume does Henny wear?

Let the Good Times Roll, Prada Paradoxe and Kylie Jenner Cosmic day to day, and Baccarat Rouge 540 for going out.
